![]() “That way not everyone is trying to use one shower,” Malzahn said. The convention center also houses the shower and locker room facilities for the larger cabins, since the cabins only have half baths. The large cabins work well for wedding groups, since they’re located right next to the convention center where the catered wedding receptions and events are held. That has a lock off, so you could actually open it up and have 28 people in the two cabins that could mix, or you could lock it off, and it could be two separate groups,” Malzahn said. “Then we actually have two very large cabins that hold 14 people in single beds. Each of the cabins have different decor themes, one being a lumberjack theme with plaid bedding. Three of the 12 cabins can house six people, since they have two rooms: one with a futon and the other with a queen-sized bed and a bunk bed. Their friendly staff comes in handy when taking care of the 17 cabins on site, 12 of which are four-person cabins, housing a queen-sized bed and a bunk bed. ![]() “We always say our daughters are our best employees because they’re just really good workers and have really great attitudes.A lot of our staff is actually friends of our daughters, and they have really good friends, so we have really good employees,” Malzahn said. The Wilderness Retreat currently employs 12 workers on an as-needed basis for catering and upkeep, and most of them are family or friends of the family. Planning weddings and other events-something the couple plans to do at the resort-is a joy for Malzahn, so opening this venue has allowed her to do a lot more of it. “By the end of (this) season we will have catered about 200 weddings, so we’ve been around the wedding business a really long time,” she added. The couple have been in the catering business for the last four years and decided it was time to open their own venue, and the resort fit their needs perfectly. “We didn’t know we were here until we were here,” Shannon Malzahn laughed. In fact, their move in was quick and kind of a last-minute deal. Jim and Shannon Malzahn moved in last month and have been getting the resort up and running on an as-needed basis. Smokey Hills Wilderness Retreat, located just outside of Osage, has reopened for the first time since 2014, and it’s under new ownership.
